2014: Merry Christmas from James, Matthew & Kitty!

Our very busy 2014 began with the Polar Vortex and Toledo’s snowiest winter ever, with a record snowfall of 84.8 inches! (Toledo’s average annual snowfall is 37.8 inches.) We were snowed in for three days over James’ birthday at the beginning of January during Level 3 snow emergencies.

James’ annual visit to Southern California to cover the Oscars provided a brief respite from the arctic weather.  Matthew was able to fly out and we visited Disneyland for three days.

As we slowly thawed from the arctic winter, we trained to run on a five-person relay team for the Glass City Marathon.  We ran our 6-mile leg of the marathon at the end of April during a beautiful spring day.

The summer was full of weddings, which afforded us wonderful opportunities to see friends and family and celebrate in the joy of the occasion.  During our 2nd annual Fourth of July holiday trip to Perryville, Maryland, to visit friends, we made a detour on the way home to visit Gettysburg National Military Park, which was an educational and humbling experience.  Matthew had the opportunity to travel to San Francisco in late July for work and spent time with friends who moved there in 2013. He brought back 12 bottles of wine from Sonoma and Napa, which we’ve been enjoying.

Matthew spent the majority of the summer recovering from a foot injury sustained during rehearsal for a musical (from which he had to withdraw) followed by a stress fracture in his right fibula due to walking unevenly from the boot on his left foot. Thanks to a wonderful physical therapy team, a very aggressive one-month training schedule and extremely supportive friends, we were able to train for, run in and finish The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler race at Walt Disney World in October. Matthew finished in 1:40:29 (1,331 out of 9,387 finishers) and James finished in 1:55:43 (2,897 out of 9,387 finishers).

As we enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends, we look forward to a return visit to Walt Disney World to celebrate New Year’s Eve and James’ birthday on January 6th with our “Florida family.”
